My laptop speakers don't recognize that my headphones are out?

A while ago, I had my headphones plugged into my laptop. I shut it off a few times and everything, with them still in. Eventually, I took them out, but my laptop didn't recognize that they weren't still in, so now the volume for my computer seems to be permanently on headphone volume. (even though they're not in). I've tried restarting my computer, adjusting the audio, everything I could think of. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be much appreciated! :)
