Headphones not being detected?

I have always used the headphones on my laptop that came with my Ipod Touch and they have always worked with my computer. Today I had them in and my computer didnt detect them..but I didnt notice and listened to music. What happened is it came out my headphones AND my laptop speakers. Why is it doing that? If it matters I have windows 7.
