My xbox mic wont work?

its maybe 2 months old. the controller has fresh batteries the mic is the kind that you can switch on and off and its plugged in and it is recognized on the screen but when i talk it doesn't pic it up when i talk the speaker doesnt have the noise coming out of it can somebody help me?
