If i was at you place I would a rented a car as their is no better option than renting car and roam in the remote areas of the island without any constraints. You just need to clear of the basis that don't leave anything in the car seat when you are not in it. Just put your luggage in the trunk and lock the car that what you got to do regardless of the fact wherever you are.
